By default, the user profile passwords are stored encrypted in QSYUPTBL library QSYS. This is the simple QPWDLVL 0 system value. QPWDLVL 1 eliminates Windows/NetServer passwords. The passwords have a 10-character limit and contains uppercase, letters and digits plus @,#, and $ characters.

For higher level passwords beginning at level 2, passwords have 128 characters and include all characters.

As a rule, the system does not decrypt passwords. Passwords are encrypted and matched against the stored encrypted value. For this reason, the system administrator must keep a written copy of the password under lock and key as a precaution.
