A multi-pronged approach to maximize resource allocation in new and existing server hardware using either hyper-visor or container technology (might be other technologies, but these are the main two) to run multiple (in some cases 100's) of operating systems, called Virtual Machines or Containers on a single server machine. The strategy involved is basically figuring out how to maximize the use of your hardware, yet still get the necessary performance. Typically your strategy will include some kind of shared storage such as Fiber SAN or ISCSI SAN, as large external storage lets you freely migrate your virtual machines between physical machines without having to copy the files to the target server. This strategy also impacts your cooling, power and DR strategies, which are all dictated by the number of physical machines you have in your data-center, which is ideally decreased dramatically by implementing your virtualization strategy.
