Data storage backup tools are software utilities that create copies of files, databases, or entire systems and servers. These copies are then isolated from the original data so that it can replace the primary storage in the event of data loss or corruption. Data backup is a strategy that must be employed by any organization that is serious about preserving its business data.

Backup tools are also used in the disaster recovery process when the copies of data or systems need to be transferred back to the primary storage to replace the irreparable data. SANs can make the restoration process much quicker by simply allowing interconnected backups to synchronize with the primary storage when data restoration is required. Servers can boot from the SAN itself.

Backup software can have several features that make data backup more effective. The first is voluming, which is the ability to compress and partition data for storage on smaller media like CDs of floppy disks. A more efficient solution would be USB flash drives or an external hard drive. For larger organizations, data is backed up on larger tape or hard disk drives that can be uploaded to off-site storage infrastructure through a network connection.

The compression features will reduce the overall size of the data while maintaining references in the data that can make sure that now important parts are lost. This also involves de-duplication, which is the process by which redundant pieces of data are removed.

There are backup tools that aid in remote backup storage as well. These tools often involve a high-speed internet or private network connection for transferring backup data copies off-site or bringing backups into recovering primary storage. This reduces the risk of irretrievable data losses in the even of a fire, cyber-attack, or other disaster that could destroy all the data if it sits in one location.

Backup tools may include file locking features that restrict file access to one file only so that a file is not accessed while another user is modifying it. The tools also tend to support incremental backups, which reduce backup time by copying only the changed pieces of data from time to time and thereby making the backup process quicker, since most of the data doesn’t need to be re-copied.

To protect data, the backup tools also typically include encryption features and commit/rollback management features. The rollback features will prevent primary data sources from being corrupted during the backup process.
