I am planning to re-arrange the data on my dataset, can anybody let me know, what the effects of re arranging data are.

Be sure that all the programs which access you data will use the latest definition of data set. Even if the field lengths are changed you are sort of re-arranging the data & will have the same impact, so be careful when you do this activity also. There are lots of other performance characteristics you will see even if the data which you have re-arranged is usable.
